Corner Steadies
The Corner Steadies are designed to support the ends of the Caravan, ensuring that it does not tip as someone walks from one end of the Caravan to the other. They are raised or lowered every time that
the Caravan is either hitched up or pitched on site. Some people use the standard winder bar supplied with the Caravan and more and more people have moved over to using a cordless drill. Cordless Drills have become more common as part of the home toolkit due to their ongoing reduction in cost. They have now become useful and affordable in the Caravanning world, where you will need to purchase a Drill Adaptor (usually only a few pounds). This will allow the Steadies to be raised and lowered quickly and using less effort, ideal if its raining. The use of a Cordless Drill will not be for everyone, as they will still like to get their exercise and experience the more conventional ways of the Caravanning life.
When pitching the Caravan at home or on site, the Steadies should be lowered on to a firm surface. If your are lowering the Steadies on to a surface that is not firm, like grass or loose gravel then you should put something solid under the Steadies like small pieces of suitable timber or install some proper Jack Pads on the Steadies. Make sure that the Steadies are lowered and tightened so that the Caravan is is firmly supported. Never try to use the Steadies to Jack the Caravan up otherwise you may cause permanent or very expensive damage to the Caravan. When pitching the Caravan on a non solid surface there will be a small element of subsidence over a period of time. It is advisable to check the Corner Steadies at least once after 24 hours.
Maintenance
Very little maintenance is required with the Corner Steadies. Usually the only maintenance will be to apply some grease. If you feel that when raising or lowering the Corner Steadies that they are not running freely and easily apply some grease to the threaded part of the assembly and and other points where the Corner Steady swivels. The cleanest and easiest way is to purchase a tin of spray White Grease. This should be available from any motor retailer that supplies car parts or accessories. Spray the Grease on to the moving parts of the Corner Steady then raise and lower the Corner Steady as you do so to allow the Grease to be applied properly to all of the moving parts.
It has been known for the Corner Steadies to collapse when the Caravan has been in use. This would usually be where either the thread or the assembly that runs along the thread has become warn. A close inspection of the thread may show worn areas. If you suspect any damage here then consult your nearest dealer for further advice.
WARNING!
Never use the Corner Steadies to Jack up the Caravan. Doing so could cause expensive damage or even permanent damage. The Corner Steadies are only designed to support the Caravan when it has been pitched.
